Hi! My name is Eliana, and I started Heart and Heelas a high school freshman.
It began as a small moment that led to a big idea. After track practice one day, I noticed holes in my socks… again. I laughed at first, but then I started thinking about what that really meant. If my socks wear out so quickly, what about people who don’t have easy access to extras?
That thought stuck with me. I learned that while many people donate coats, gloves, and food to those in need, but socks are one of the most requested and least donated items at homeless shelters.
Yet they’re such a simple and important part of comfort, warmth, and dignity.
Heart and Heel grew from this realization. Our goal is to help people by sourcing and donating new socks to shelters.
Every step we take in life towards helping others is one where we’re lifting someone else up too. (Must be more clever.)
Socks are consistently reported as the number one most requested clothing item at homeless shelters, yet also one of the least donated items.
Clean, properly fitting socks can be hard to come by for people in need.
Socks help retain body heat, and protect the feet against the elements.
Wearing a clean pair of socks can create a person sense of self-respect and dignity.
A signle pair of socks is an achieveable donation, with an outsized impact on the person who receives it.
Socks are easy to store, distribute and carry, which makes them a managable item for donations.
